On October 11th, a kindergarten girl was put on homicide and suicide watch for a reason that you won't want to believe. In the article "Kindergartener Forced to Sign Anit-Suicide Contract After Pointing Crayon", a girl only identified as Elizabeth was placed on suicide and homicide watch after pointing a crayon at a fellow student saying, "Pew! Pew!" She was then forced into signing a "safety contract" without her mother knowing. The mother, Rebecca, did not agree with the policy.
I really don't know how to respond to this article. The absurdity of the situation is so mind-blowing that I honestly can't believe how this could have happened. Because of the actions that the teachers took, Elizabeth now knows what homicide and suicide is. I think schools need to calm down on their security policies because all it is doing is scarring the kids for a long time.
This is absolutely ridiculous. Kindergarteners don't even understand the implications of what they're doing when it comes to fooling around like that. They don't understand death. And further more, they are never serious. They're just playing for God's sake! Who HASN'T pretended to shoot their friends with their hand or a stick or something? No one ever means anything by it. Schools need to let kids be kids and let them grow and learn. By sheltering them from LIFE they're setting them up to be the kind of people who can't deal with serious problems later in life.
ReplyDeleteThis IS ridiculous! Like Giles and London, I can't believe this actually happened-- no kindergartener should be punished for this silly action when I'm sure she did not know what she was doing. This is taking school security WAY too far.
ReplyDeleteI feel like there has to be more to this story that wasn't reported. I agree that the only thing these actions did was scare the kids. I wonder if the school will have to face any legal actions since the girl's mother was not informed.
